Staying Healthy with Sound
Can sound help you stay healthy?
The answer is yes, but to get to the why, we have to enter the world of vibration.
Talking about vibration is not some woo-woo new age fad. It is highly practical, logical and scientific — made notable by Albert Einstein and contemporaries such as David Bohm, Werner Heisenberg, and Fritjof Capra, who, with their discoveries of quantum physics, challenged the dualistic and fragmented scientific approach of the 17th century that had (and continues to) reign supreme.
Of course vibratory knowledge didn’t start with these scientific pioneers of the early 20th century. Indigenous communities have been utilizing vibratory practices and sound since ancient times — but to those indoctrinated by “modern” science (based in principles now over 400 years old!), the purpose of these practices made little sense and were often (and still are) demeaned. However, through the gifts of Quantum Physics, modern civilization finally had the language and means to understand what, before, had been misunderstood as simple-minded mysticism or fantasy with no basis in “reality.” Quantum physics, and its gifts of vibratory knowledge, helped and continues to help us shift the modern paradigm — still subbornly stuck in 400 year old thinking — that the physical, material, world is all there is.
Back to sound, and how it works.
Sound, or vibration, is the fundamental essence of everything in and around us. (Remember, anything that vibrates makes sound!) Subtle, quantum waves of vibration oscillate, push, pull, spiral and swarm together – gathering density as they do — forming the atoms, molecules and cells of the material world, including our bodies. This process also works in reverse. The dense vibrations within phsyical matter oscillate, push, pull, spiral out and release density — forming more subtle energetic frequencies around the material objects — sometimes called the energetic aura.
So when it comes to protecting ourselves against sickness, germs, bacteria and viruses — considering what is happening here from a vibratory (or sound) perspective is important. Out human ‘selves’ are a collection of frequencies at various densities that are constantly exposed to and at play with the symphony of ever-present vibrations around us. It is the nature of vibrations, or sound waves, to entrain one another. Meaning, that when pulse waves of sound come into contact with one another, they attempt to organize and harmonize through their oscillating dance. Strong, coherent, frequencies will pull similar, yet less-strong, frequencies into their vibrational pattern.
If a vibration is in resonance, or in rhythm, with our cohesive well-being, it can help reinforce and strengthen our collective ‘pulse’ as a whole. However, if a vibration – like a virus, for instance - clashes with aspects of our energy field it creates friction, discomfort or dis-ease at some level.
If the coherence of the field is strong compared with the clashing vibe, the clashing vibe may be able to be gradually entrained and/or released through the oscillating vibratory process without much disturbance.
However, if the field is not coherent or balanced, and the clashing vibe is strong, the clashing vibe may start entraining aspects of the field and pulling it out of whack for a longer period of time making sickness settle in more strongly and making recovery more difficult.
What makes a field lose coherence?
As multi-vibrational beings in a multi-vibrational world, it can be a challenge keeping our collective vibrations balanced and in alignment when we are being pushed and pulled in different directions, quite literally. Though in times of change or stress, this challenge becomes even more significant.
As the year becomes darker and colder, we may not be able to connect with the healing vibrations of nature as easily. We may not be able to move our bodies as much. Our diets may change to heavier, richer or preserved foods. Increased demands around school, work or holidays may add pressure. Decreased daylight hours and temperatures may make it challenging to feel warm, light and connected. All of these things matter, and all may shift our ability to feel integrated and balanced within ourselves and within our environment.
What can we do?
Sound reminds us, and gives us tools to nurture coherence in ourselves and in the circumstances around us. Coherence is key. A coherent vibe is a strong vibe. Working with healing sounds on a regular basis allows subtle and material energies within the body to remain harmonized and regular making it more difficult for dissonant energies to pull us out of harmony.
Here are some tips:
Use your breath
Try this breathing technique. The breath - our primordial healing sound - is an ideal way to bring coherence between our heart and our mind — even the frequency of the earth itself. Read more.
Use your voice
Powered by the breath, your voice is your very own sound healing instrument! Learn more about using your voice for healing here.
Tone, nourish, and balance your chakras. Toning certain vowel sounds balances the chakras. Pay special attention to areas vulnerable during sick season: the chest and lungs (AH), the throat (EYE), and the sinuses (AYE), the stomach (OH).
Tone the Bijas. These powerful, seed syllables align and balance your field with elemental energies. Also, these recordings use the interval of the perfect 5th. Energy generated by the perfect 5th can destroy harmful bacteria, viruses and enhance the immune system.
Use mantra.
Mantras are a powerful way to align with healing energetic patterns that have been potent for thousands of years. Read more about mantras here.
Try a few:
Durga’s Mantra: Durga is highly protective from destructive energies both within and around you. If you tend to get overwhelmed with fear and anxiety about germs and sickness– this one may be for you!
Ram’s Mantra: This mantra helps stimulate the healing response. Ram, the seed syllable of the solar plexus helps encourage inner light, strength and courage.
Medicine Buddha Mantra (coming soon!): If you or someone you know does find yourself getting sick, chant this mantra to be relieved of sickness.
Sun Mantra: Even when the sun isnt as visible during the dark months, you can still stay connected to its powerful, life-giving energies.
Use your mind
The fleeting vibrations of the mind can be a powerful ally if we know how to channel this energy for our highest well-being through intention.
Cultivate an intention statement for yourself with an accompanying visual to help you stay well. Make it positive, present-tense, and emotionally engaging. Learn how to grow a high quality intention.
Change the story. If your mind tends towards anxious or fearful thoughts, such as “I hope I won’t get sick!” stop and change the story. Something like: “I am protected and resilient,” “I align with that which makes me stronger and more whole.”
